Debut album, “Then, Again,” coming September 2026
Melodic, guitar-driven indie rock built on big hooks, thoughtful lyrics, and a deep love of classic pop songwriting.
The debut album, Then, Again, blends the energy and texture of ’90s/00s indie and alternative rock with the melodic instincts of power pop. Ringing guitars and tight harmonies underscore stories of restless dreamers, anxious romantics, and everyday moments.
Recorded independently in New Jersey, Then, Again is the first album of original music by Adam Zurbruegg, composed after years of working as a sideman and cover band musician in the New York City metro area.
Listeners may hear traces of Fountains of Wayne, Matthew Sweet, Weezer, or The Apples in Stereo, but Then, Again ultimately speaks in its own voice: one that is simultaneously hopeful and humble, timely and timeless.
Track Listing and Lyrics
-
Branches that fell, coins in a well
Houses that sway, rivers that swell
A dog in a pen, a fox in a den
Women and men
A path in the wood, a snake with a hood
A person that did, and a person that could
Afloat, adrift, a raft, a boat, a fear, a hopeIt doesn’t stop, it doesn’t stop
It doesn’t stop raining, it doesn’t stop rainingThe ringing of phones, sightings of drones
Visions of death, tendons and bones
Things to be done, breakfast and lunch
Nowhere to run
Feelings of lust, valor and trust
A beam of light on a pile of dust
Afloat, adrift, a heart, a fist, a scream, a kissIt doesn’t stop, it doesn’t stop
It doesn’t stop raining, it doesn’t stop raining
It doesn’t stop raining, it doesn’t stop raining
It doesn’t stop raining, it doesn’t stop raining -
I can’t sleep til after midnight
I have this one dream where I start to drown
It pulls me downHave patience, this situation shouldn’t have to last too long
Lately, I know I’ve been a little crazy
You’re the only one who saves me, save me now
You could be the only one who understood me
You’re the only one who pulls me, pulls me outUnblinking, the silence is profound
Feels like I’m sinking, deep underground
It pulls me downPlease stay with me, please forgive me
It’s just a phase I’m going throughLately, I know I’ve been a little crazy
You’re the only one who saves me, save me now
You could be the only one who understood me
You’re the only one who pulls me, pulls me outMorning, creeping through the blinds
Comfort, that only you provide
It pulls me outLately, I know I’ve been a little crazy
You’re the only one who saves me, save me now
You could be the only one who understood me
You’re the only one who pulls me, pulls me outLately, I know I’ve been a little crazy
You’re the only one who saves me, save me now
You could be the only one who understood me
You’re the only one who pulls me, pulls me out -
She made an account on all the dating sites
Uploaded a pic under ten megabytes
She detailed out all her behaviors
And her favorite team, the New York RangersBut when she matched, she detached and she’s gone
She was built for the exit, built for the exit
Pointing one foot to the door
She was born for expecting to be rejected
Then coming back for moreDear Allison, Brave Allison
Poor Allison, Silly AllisonShe goes to the bar most every Saturday
And calls everyone unsatisfactoryShe goes home alone, but gives her number out
Then sits by the phone, and when he reaches outThey do brunch, she orders Captain Crunch, and she’s gone
She was built for the exit, built for the exit
Pointing one foot to the door
She was born for expecting to be rejected
Then coming back for moreDear Allison, Brave Allison
Poor Allison, Silly Allison
Dear Allison, Brave Allison
Poor Allison, Silly Allison -
Hellos and good vibes
Then come the goodbyes
Little things I saw you do
That I will gladly misconstrueAnd write postcards for paper dolls
Pin them up on my bedroom wall
It’s a fiction, a fantasy
Maybe it’s all I need to believe
In a glass house with painted walls
Costume jewels and plastic cars
And postcards for paper dollsChit chat, it slows
Tick-tock, the clock goes
Only when you’re out of sight
Will I find the words to writePostcards for paper dolls
Pin them up on my bedroom wall
It’s a fiction, a fantasy
Maybe it’s all I need to believe
In a glass house with painted walls
Costume jewels and plastic cars
And postcards -
In 1992 I had a poster in my room
Of Nirvana, all I wanted was to be that fucking cool
At Christmas in December, I got my first Fender
It really was a budget brand, but man
I played it til my hands bled
On Lithium and Stay Away
My favorite song was On a Plain
Pretending I was Kurt CobainGive the people what they want
Make it look a little non-chalant
Smile while you dance for them
And then, again, again
Give the people what they want
Don’t you want to be a big shot?
Don’t you want to be a star?
It isn’t very hard
Give the people what they wantI did Shakespeare in the Park when I was twenty years of age
And I felt like Ethan Hawke each time I walked upon the stage
I did comedy and drama, I was such a prima donna
Wanna be up on a movie screen in scenes that the Academy will love
Another thing, I want my name in Hollywood, on the Walk of Fame
Pretending I was Michael CaineGive the people what they want
Make it look a little non-chalant
Smile while you dance for them
And then, again, again
Give the people what they want
Don’t you want to be a big shot?
Don’t you want to be a star?
It isn’t very hard
Give the people what they wantNow I’m in communications ‘cause I had to pay the bills
But I’m proud to say I found a way to keep getting my thrills
I’m the bassist in a cover band, until I get discovered
And it makes me feel a little bit like I have hit it big, and so again,
I’m Kurt Cobain, up on the stage, I’m Michael Caine, Nicholas Cage
The only thing there is to say…Give the people what they want
Make it look a little non-chalant
Smile while you dance for them
And then, again, again
Give the people what they want
Don’t you want to be a big shot?
Don’t you want to be a star?
It isn’t very hard
Give the people what they want -
If Chicago weren’t so windy, I would move out there today
And buy a sweatshirt like Mike Ditka wore back in the day
Pretend I’m Al Capone and smoke cigars
While drawing blueprints of the bank
But here I stay
I mean, but here I remain every, every dayIf Seattle weren’t so rainy, I would pack my things and leave
Sit at Starbucks, sipping coffee roasted from the finest beans
I’d pretend that I’m Kurt Cobain and tear holes in my jeans
Be in all the coolest scenes
And buy a raincoat so the rain won’t bring me down
But here I stay
I mean, but here I remain every, every dayI’d move to New Orleans if it wasn’t for the heat
Buy a linen suit and gator boots to walk down Bourbon Street
Join a dixie band so I could play the double bass
Eat beignets and etouffee
And maybe learn to parlais vous francais
But here I stay
I mean, but here I remain every, every dayMaybe I’ll go out to Hollywood
Shannon said she’d come with me and I believe she would
Even more than that, I think that it would be really good
But here I stay
I mean, but here I remain every, every day -
One night in Collins Circle, I think the time was half past ten
You smelled like strawberry milkshakes and Marlboro reds
I wore a jacket that I borrowed, and a tee shirt from Express
And we shared a taxi downtown to a party at Yvette’s
I wanted to kiss you then… but I didn’tYou had a boyfriend from your hometown, who didn’t treat you well
Not to be outdone, I went and found someone as well
We were playing darts in the back of Paulie’s Hotel
When you told me that you ended it, so I came out of my shell
I asked you to go to lunch… but you didn’tThere’s been nights when I was hurtful, and took you for granted
There’s a crack still in the door frame, from each time that you slammed it
I can act a little stubborn, you tend to act defensively
We both say a lot of sentences that neither of us mean
We could have apologized… but we didn’tTime wasted, can’t be replaced and
I want to have a little longer
Just a little longer with youSo give me just a little bit longer, baby
Give me just a little bit more
Give me just a little bit longer, baby
Give me just a little bit more -
I was waiting for you on Park Avenue
I’ve got a bottle to drink, I stole it just after six
From the office’s party cabinet
Now I’m standing by the number six line
I wore my new bow tie
I even think I tied it correctly, I’m directly
Here on Park AvenueI’m still waiting for you on Park Avenue
You’re always ten minutes late, you know it drives me insane
But baby, I love you anyway
A busker’s doing pantomime
I wonder if you’re gonna get here on time
I’m such a lonely fella, he loans me his umbrella
Here on Park AvenueI think I’m through waiting for you
I could take my champagne, hop on the train
I’ve never been to the Bronx Botanical
Wait a minute, who’s that girl
Standing by the newsstand in sequins and pearls?
I never had a doubt, you’d never leave me out
Here on Park Avenue -
If I were a ghost, I’d make the most of it
Fooling around with folks on the ground
I’d levitate books, and peer through the walls
So innocently, when no one’s around
To see if you missed me, now that I’m not around
If I were a ghostIf I were king, my people would starve
And I wouldn’t change a thing, it may seem bizarre
I’d be way too distracted, only impacted by you
It may seem a little cruel
But there’s nothing I’d rather do
Than to lay with a Queen like you
If I were the kingIf I were a carpenter, you’d be my lady
But you are the carpenter, me I’m just lazy
So build me an altar, build a cathedral
I’ll take you to wed, I’ll lay at your feet now -
I’ll put you on the next train to Kentucky
We’ll consider ourselves lucky
And I’ll meet you when the summer turns to fall
Where the horses ride the open track
Once we go, we’ll never turn back
From LouisvilleWe should spend a weekend down in Memphis
Visit the birthplace of Elvis
I know I’ll never be a star like him
But I could teach the second grade
You and I could promenade, we will
Through Louisville
